Funnily enough, yesterday I was just thinking about how Sadamoto would end 
the manga and immediately Misato and Ritsuko facing off came to mind.

I've always believed that Anno didn't "finish off" their relationship very 
well in the animé. It just sorta fizzles out after a few minor 
confrontations in the control room and the destruction of the Rei clones 
(which seems rather underplayed, in my mind).

It just seems right that Misato would be there when Ritsuko has reached her 
lowest, trying to stop Gendo's plans out of pure unadulterated jealousy.

However, having said that, the manga hasn't (or hasn't YET) made that much 
reference to Ritsuko's and Misato's first meeting and the fact that they 
were good friends prior to NERV (please correct me if I'm misremembering)... 
so, who knows?
