: Manga. Volume 9. Kaworu's 1st meeting with Shinji. If you've read it
: you'll know why I consider it sick.

:
: It is sick, but only by human standards. I think it is meant to
shock you into remembering Kaworu is not human and has no concept of
good and evil (innocence doesn't mean that you can't do wrong, only
that you don't know that it is wrong). Everyone reading the manga by
now knows the truth about Kaworu's identity, but back when he was
first introduced in the anime, it was still a surprise. That's why I
think Sadamoto felt the need to write a scene like this.
:
: Remember, when you see this scene, that three billion human beings
have already died "off stage" because of SEELE and NERV's machinations
in the Second Impact...I think Sadamoto detailing the murder of Kaji's
friends in Vol. 7 was a similar type of scene to this one in Vol. 9,
reminding you of the essential inhumanity and ruthlessness of the
situation.

I was only a little shocked by what happened to Kaji's friends as I
kind of expected it. And they knew about the risks of their situation,
not completely innocent & trusting.

Its that classic Spock to McCoy remark about humans being more upset
about a single being than a multitude. But so true.

Kaworu's acction was & is a shock in the manga. I ripped out the
offending pages!
The contrast with his animé personality is complete, whatever happens
to him can't be bad enough. And I thought Shinji UNDER-reacted, that
was worse :(
