Jesse has a very good point, Rei herself says that she is bonded to all
people, and even though that bond is not the same mother/child bond the rest
of the pilots have to their units, it is still a rather profound bond.
After all, Kaworu was able to sync with Unit 2 at any level he chose.  Kyoko
Zepplin Soryu isn't his mother, so that throws out the belief that it has to
be a mother/child combination.  Lilith and Adam are equal, as Rei and Kaworu
are.

Rei is a wild card as far as I am concerned, being an Angel and the mother
of humanity, she can circumvent some of those preconceived notions.
