The conclusion reached on the ML was "patterning".  When Kyouko performed the
contact experiment with Eva-02, her "pattern" was imprinted on the Eva/core but
did not transfer at that time.  (Thus she remained alive and eas able to keep her
form.)  When she died, her freed soul was drawn to the pattern and entered the Eva
at that time.  (Note that Asuka was not selected as pilot and did not actually
sync with the Eva until after Kyouko's death.)  This also explains how Rei's
(Lilith's) soul can transfer between the different Rei bodies.

It seems from the series that Asuka was selected as a pilot *before* her mother died--remember her flashbacks when she is running into her mother's room saying "mommy, mommy, they chose me, I am an elite pilot", that is when she finds her mother dead.  So maybe it took her mother's death for her to snyc with Unit 02, but she was already chose before her death it would seem
