Touji knew he was going into a war zone, potentially lethal scenario.
he made a conscious choice.

The kitten was innocent & trusting.

I did feel very sickened by Toji's death, I liked his manga character
& enjoyed his verbal head-butting with Asuka.

The kitten was *illustrated* being killed graphically, down to its cry
of pain "speech" bubble. Sadamoto could have drawn it much more
succinctly, instead of in full detail had he really wanted to use it
as a device to show Kaworu's inhumanity. It was an ill-concieved
scene.

 Shinji's under-reaction might be the result of Shinji's brutalisation
from his experiences, though, with bigger consequences coming. We'll
see. Maybe.
