I started out on Usenet. Japan.anime.evangelion was my original home and
for a number of years it had a good base of regulars and some very
interesting discussion were had. It's where I saw the 2nd Angel - Lilith
Cardass evidence was first posted, and the extended live action and
alternative endings information discussed. It's practically dead now and
has been for a couple of years unfortunately.
I generally prefer Usenet/Mailing Lists because they are less accessible
than forums. As condescending as it sounds, this seems to weed out a lot
of the annoying, childish users, and thus I think the standard of
discussion is generally higher.
That being said, I've been predominately posting on forums for the last
three to four years. I dislike avatars, and always choose not to display
them if I can. I dislike long signatures (especially ones containing
images) and so I always turn them off as well if I can. My posting style
was shaped by my Usenet experience, so I don't often used "quote"
features but instead reply to each specific piece of text in a post. For
me it's always been about the discussion, so most of the extra features
of forums are just bloat for me, I just want a place to talk with other
people about topics I'm interested in.
