Patterning is indeed a theory (not a fact), but it is not an abstract assumption because it deals with a mechanism that is *necessary* for a *known fact* (soul transfer).  For example, we know that soul transfer exists, that Nerv is aware of it, and that they can control it.  The only thing not known is the specific mechanics.  However, using the common assumption that the soul leaves the body upon death, then there *must* be some way to attract and hold the soul. "Patterning" is simply the word used to describe the most reasonable means (pattern affinity, resonance, etc.) proposed thus far.  However, it is not necessary to insist on the word "patterning" -- all we need to know is that some concrete method is *necessary*.

In contrast to this, soul multiplicity is *not necessary* for anything except an *unproven theory* (Rei-1 in Eva-00), which makes it the abstract possibility.
