Seriously, in the manga Ritsuko was cynically looking for the most
er...susceptibly willing, new pilot volunteer. In the animé it was
explained briefly.
(If the bond is male>female, would it have to be parental?)

All the children in Shinji's class had no mother (please correct me if
wrong). Either Kaji told Misato, or Misato found by herself with or
without Hyuga's help, that they all had no mothers, and they were all
potential pilots for Evas, having been selected by NERV = Marduk
report.

So is there a secret about more than just Kyouko & Yui?
