Good point, hadn't really thought of that. However, it is said that all 
the students that are in Shinji's class are perspective pilots. Could it 
be a safe assumption, that because a soul of a mother is required in the 
eva, that each has lost their mother, and that NERV is collecting those 
souls for EVA?

Perhaps this is why the dumby plug is so important. Its rei's soul in 
all the eva. rei being the incarnation of lilith.
