[EVA] Renewal Restoration Process

I've heard comments that Anno has said it took longer to restore eva than
originally animate and film. For the restoration process, did they take
the original negatives and digitally restore, or re-shoot all of the cels?
The second seems unlikely due to the fact many cels have been leaked and
due to time and other such variables I'm sure many are just not there
anymore. Anyway, I just wanted to know if Gainax has said how they renewed
eva officially?
