So was it ever really explained, why 14 year old Misato, who hated her
father, was at the Antarctic with him? Being a minor I presume the
choice was made by adults over-ruling her feelings & wishes.

Perhaps going by her reminiscence in ep.25, her mother had breakdowns.
Perhaps Dr. Katsuragi had to take Misato with him as Mrs K. was not in
a fit state to look after her.

Eva needs a prequel anime series, not a LA movie.
