In this case, it's "whichever you prefer". I'm starting with "sex" as the 
default; if that does not satisfy, then "gender".

LCL is called "soup of life", and in #25' Misato refers to humans reaching 
the end of their evolutionary potential. It seems logical that Lilith bled 
(aherm) the primordial ooze from which all life (sans Adam's kids) evolved 
as per usual.

Potential scenario for Adam: Before being skewered, she laid eggs that 
eventually hatched into #03 ~ #16 (#17 is a bit ... strange) approximately 
15 years after 2I, when her Doors of Guf opened and souls for her children 
were finally released. In an image depicting the Dead Sea Scrolls, in the 
pre-Renewal version of #23', there is a lineup of embryonic entities 
illustrated; if these represent Angels (as in Adam's children), that 
directly implies that Adam was impregnated before leaving the Homeworld.
