[EVA] Eva story as a recollection of Shinji?

This bit always bugged me. I get what the writers were trying to convey, and
they did succeed, but they would have done better to have Shinji narrating as if
he were thinking. Recollecting the scene as he does just automatically adds the
ambiguity you have pointed out. Its subtle, but really just as jarring as a book
switching from third person to first person halfway through a chapter.
