Yes. And it's a sad state of affairs when you realize that the best father
figure in Evangelion is Kaji, and the best mother figure is Misato. Both are
incredibly screwed up individuals, who mean well but really aren't cut out
for the roles they play. Kaji does serve as a surrogate father for Shinji,
and for Asuka as well. Which of course makes Asuka's infatuation with him
even more disturbing.
Evangelion is about connecting with mothers. Evangelion also has a glorious
lack of positive maternal role models. Anno is obviously trying to say
something, since in a series where the mother is given such prominence, Yui
is a bitch. Kyouko insane. Naoko a murderer. Mrs. Katsuragi emotionally
unstable. Lilith and Adam are absentee parents. And everyone else's mother
is dead. Except for Asuka (and miscellaneous classmate)'s step-mother. You
know, Asuka's step-mother is probably the most emotionally stable mother
figure in the series. It's a pity that there wasn't room to explore Asuka's
relationship with her parents in the same manner that Shinji's were.
Wow, I'm getting rambly again. But the point remains. The roles for mothers
in Evangelion is to be absent, either because you're dead, or because you're
emotionally unstable. Even the most stable mother is absent, since her
daughter is half a world away. I mean, Asuka had her breakdown and her
parents didn't come to visit. What jerks.
