It's more reasonable under such circumstances to see the show in terms
of its relevance to real-world beliefs, even if the creators
themselves are not part of Western religious culture.

@@Eva could be seen as a new spin on old Toho Godzilla monster type
movies.

The angels are monsters like Rodin etc, some "angels" even resemble
the classic foes - bipedal with rays, multiple legged ones, ones with
large flagella, flying angels.

Godzilla's equivalent is Eva 01 the monster which usually ends up
fighting mankind's enemies. Vast real estate damage ensues as in the
Toho movies.

Episode 1 even begins like Godzilla movies, with rows of identical
tanks. An angel/monster emerges from the sea.

And what has awoken/enraged these monsters? Man meddling with nature.
Godzilla & co were awoken by A-bomb tests/vibrations usually & then
went away, to return later or send others.

The Eva spin is interesting & entertaining, especially characters
psyches. What makes it different & more than a mere B movie story. X
Files intrigue, tragic families mad scientists, black ops, secret
agendas. Is Shinji an anime "Young Fox Mulder". Could Dana Scully be a
Rei-Asuka adult? So Deep Throat is Gendou, Fox's father & sister is
the Yui equivalent (sacrifice to save male child). The Committee is
SEELE (international members). Krajieck is Kagi. Female CIA mole is
Misato.

"Biogenesis" secret - Dead Sea Scrolls.

Given that X Files was at its peak when Eva was been created, the
latter's influence can't be discounted for the uh...cerebral part of
NGE.
