I always thought that Shinji's hand-to-gland combat at the beginning  
of THE END OF EVANGELION was at least in part Anno's wish to comment  
bluntly on the sexualization Gainax puts into its own anime, EVA in  
particular. It was his way of saying, "Yeah, you out there in the  
audience, you know who you are--and you know who we are." It's  
interesting that Shinji fires the one o'clock gun when Asuka is  
literally comatose; she may as well not even really be there as a  
human being. He's prompted to masturbate to Asuka as a life-size  
figurine.
