As I was taught, Kabuki uses make-up, Noh uses masks. I'm not quite sure 
which of those the actor is using, but I'm leaning more towards make-up. And 
really, given all the other venues that Evangelion has entered I'm kind of 
surprised that a live action stage adaptation hasn't occured. Many other 
properties have undergone the adaptation (Utena, Prince of Tennis, and even 
Rose of Versailles) and done quite well. And given Gainax's propensity for 
exploiting Evangelion by any means necessary, well, it does seem odd doesn't 
it?
