Dear Sailor Star Dust,

It may seem that Sadamoto is changing the characters' personalities, and it's hard not to call them changes, compared to the anime. But it's worth noting that within Gainax, Sadamoto, as a co-creator of Eva, has always been seen as having the right to create a separate interpretation of the characters, so it's not playing with words to say that he isn't really "changing" them. By the time the first episode of the anime premiered in Japan, Sadamoto had already published the first volume of the manga and was well into the second. The differences between the anime and manga may have seemed more subtle earlier on in Sadamoto's version, but in retrospect even the very first panels, where Shinji writes that he has no sense of a future, and doesn't care if he gets killed, establish him as a more outspoken (if not less negative) personality than Anno's version.
