Nobody said there wouldn't be a mix of scenes from both previous endings. Nor
that Sadamoto would "go the Shinji/Rei way", although I do know what you mean, by
books 8 and 9 it felt as though he was kind of bowing to both merchandising (the
ugly double chainsaw from Eva2) and SR fans (naked Reis around), however he still
managed to deal in depth with the roots of Asuka's personality and convincingly
reintroduced her last month. In that same stage it became clear that Sadamoto had
Shinji and Rei come closer in the recent times so that her loss, the revelations
about her and the clear lack of recollection of what they had shared would be the
final blow to what Shinji had held dear. As it is now, Shinji has vowed to bear
the responsibility of Kaworu's death and to make up his mind about what he wants
to protect. It won't be the world because of itself, it won't be because he's
ordered to do it. If he will save the day, it'll be because it holds something
important to him, but Sadamoto wanted him not to have anything to hold onto as he
makes this decision. None of the people he wants to protect is there side by side
with him, even Misato is distant, and yet he must want to protect them without
expecting anything in exchange. That would truly be "A man's battle", a sign of
maturity which should still be the point of the show.
While Shinji not the embodiment of Anno's immaturity might make him less
"realistic", I wouldn't say it makes him more stereotypical. If anything, Shinji
is still a character who runs away, only this time around if confronted about it
he'll turn around and lash out.
Now let's see if he's gone beyond the point of not caring if he'd die.
