To me the split was Rei II's death.  It was that particular Rei who
Shinji had grown fond of, & who had slight motherly/sisterly interest
in.

Rei III was formal & distant.  I think its an important factor in how
anime Shinji's psyche is affected.  He goes off her, & discounts her,
which leaves him more vulnerable for Kaworu.  Shinji is a "friend in
need", without any peers left to associate with - *his* Rei is gone,
as are his classmates & Asuka is hospitalised.
(Rei herself, said "I think I am the third", which means she is a
different Rei.)

The complementation Rei personality, is Rei II IMO.
