Sadamoto has slightly altered the dialog to give more information,
but the part in question is basically the same as the anime dialog.
And I stand by my interpretation, because the one you are suggesting
(and that was used by ADV) does not work logically. The lack of a
subject in the Japanese sentence means that one must be inferred from
context, and that context is clearly provided by the following
sentence due to the use of the relational word "because (kara)".

Please see my other post for the logical reasoning, and you will see
that it also applies to the anime dialog. Not having a soul is
different from having a soul that has shut itself away, and the term
"absent" cannot be used to try and link the two completely different
states.

We know that Eva-02 has a soul, so impersonal grammar or not, Kaworu
cannot be talking about Eva-02.

"M"

> Because the soul of Eva-02 has shut itself away.

> 'without soul'
> it's not Kaworu himself, but the Eva unit. The sentence "Tamashi
> nakereba
> douka dekiru sa." it's 100% impersonal, right? And the following
> one just
> explain why the soul in Unit-2, while still present (it's Asuka's
> mother
> soul, we know) is supposed to be considered just like absent,
> because it's
> shutting itself away.

> Kaworu HAS a soul (Adam's, actually) ad that would result in
> something to be
> considered as nothing but a big misunderstung of the anime line/
> script by
> Sadamoto.
