I wonder what relevance has physical joining to Eva, all things considered. In 
the event of Third Impact, metaphysical joining is possible, probably culminating 
in the emobodiment into the Original Being (whatever that was) which had no 
"Other" and thus could not suffer pain from interaction. But even then, IIRC we 
have no reason to believe that the bodies turned to LCL would be assimilated to 
the single entity.

Another kind of merging we see is the 16th Angel trying to become one with both 
Rei/00' and Shinji/01. It never got to be total merging, but it seemed to be 
something very different from the infestation by Iroul in the early episodes, it 
happened when it had already been stated that Angels were seeking contact with 
the human mind and a will to "become one" was explicitly expressed.

This case is one possible bridge between the concepts of physical and 
metaphysical merging, which appear to be separate matters in the occurrances 
highlighted above, and it isn't really shown as relevant per se, so I'm wondering 
if the physical part should be considered as relevant as the metaphysical one, 
which we know to be the metaphore used by the authors to indicate one extreme in 
the range of possible human interactions, which in turn define existance.
