@@Gendou was always a thug. His student record, befors joining NERV as
a the main example. Yui might have mellowed him & losing her made him
cold & hard again. A truly "end justifies the means" Machiavellian
character.

I respect his contempt for SEELE though. I'm sure he blamed them for
what happened to Yui, & deciding to use their technology & goals to
try & regain contact with her must have seemed like poetic justice to
him. Had he tried to explain all this to Shinji, instead of using &
abusing him, what have made - a less unique but more satisfying story.
