Shinji has his mother's compassion & decency (such as they were), and
some of his own character. He may lack a few social graces (& he is
just early teens) & be a bit immature.

Gendou has worse style, if any of his behaviour can be considered
stylish at all, in any sense. We don't know what Gendou's course at
University was (do we?), just that he was picked on for being an
aggressive loner. I can only guess Yui liked him for his caveman &
perhaps lack or pretence.

Where Shinji is isolated, is in lack of sense of direction. His
parents both had some & also the other schoolkids we see.
