You are totally correct when you say that also Episode 1-20 has been edited
for the original home video release. Neverless, the original 'tv version'
never made in any home video form, nor in Japan nor in the west. The only
'original tv cut' which were sold in home video were ep.21-26 in the
West.(*) That's because the original Japanese home video releases 'paused'
at Genesis0:10 to have the movies released, and then Genesis0:11~14 came out
in Japan with the 'upgraded' ep 21-24 and the double ending. Please also
remember that EoE materials also were included in this SERIES homevideo
release as the two episode they are (Air and Magokoro) with a slight edited
and different cut in comparison with the theather movie cut. I mean, not
only the ending is different.

As you can see, in the original SERIES Japan domestic home video release:

1) No 'tv version' was ever published.
2) 'short form' for Ep21-24 was NOT published, hence those episode were
actually 'ereased' from the series continuity and canon.
3) EoE footage was present, and in a different and original editing.

Now, this was the series canon. Movies were also released in the 'movie
box', but those were a different story. The original Japan DVD release also
followed this exact format.

Since then, Gainax started to milk the Eva-cow to the point of ruin it's
logic. Since the Second Impact Box was released, not even to mention the
mess Renewal is, Gainax screwed-up royally with the material included in the
home video release. Basically they re-entered the 'short version' for
Ep21-24, which is nonsense, and also EREASED the series-editing EoE
material, just presenting the Movies in their 'theatrical version' WITHIN
the series. As a matter of fact, if you want to see the editing Anno Hideaki
wanted for Air and Magokoro when they were put into the series, you have to
buy any of the ORIGINAL Japanese home video releases.

Also, this 'final edit' of Air and Magokoro have NEVER BEEN published
outside Japan.

(*) As for the very original 'tv edit episodes', the only one ever published
are, as I said, ep21-26 OUTSIDE Japan. That's because the series rights were
sold for foreing publishing BEFORE the Japanese Genesis0:11~ were releases,
so basically no home video edits for the last six episode was ready at the
time. So Gainax just sent to their western licensee the TV masters for the
last six episodes. You can spot the difference for the TV original version
have the furigana for the episode titles, of course. :-)
