I was really under the impression that the "gimmick" behind the Second
Impact DVD Box Sets were that they were releases of the show as originally
aired on TV, short episode previews and the such. If anyone has them and is
willing to clarify, that'd be wonderful.

>From what I understand, if you sent in proofs of purchase of all the LDs to
Gainax, you could get a limited edition Genesis 0:X which had the original
TV versions of 21-24. I'm pretty sure that it was rare and limited, hence
why you've never heard of or seen it.
Anyone with a copy is free to speak up and talk about it.

Yes, but ADV previously had been under an agreement with Gainax, that they
couldn't release their episodes until after Gainax did. But for 21-26, they
went ahead and released them anyways. I'm pretty sure that resulted at least
the last two episodes being released in North America before they were
released anywhere else. ADV even advertised them as such. (Sneaky bastards.)
That was partially because they didn't quite have the rights for the revised
versions of 21-24, and partially because they didn't want to wait for Gainax
to finish animating and fixing those episodes. I mean, it's not like Gainax
has a history of not being on time or anything...

But is it the FINAL FINAL edit? Was Death(true)^2 the version that had the
"This is how Evangerion is supposed to look like" title screen?
>Poor Rebirth. ;-)
It was preserved on LD. I mean, the differences between Rebirth and Air are
really only for the hardcore fans. Like us. A different audio track, some
cuts are longer or shorter, some animation was redone, the secret of whose
soul is in Unit00 was removed, and the ending cuts in earlier.
That being said, it is a pity that Gainax has decided that Rebirth, as the
work-in-progress preview for Air, is no longer suitable for home video
release and has such replaced it with Air, cut down to look like Rebirth.
