I'm not sure if Gainax killed their site, so much as their full-time translator left the company. It should be remembered, however, that for about three years Gainax produced a bilingual site in great detail, and during the most exciting time in their studio. They were the first anime studio to speak directly to the English-language world, even providing live webcam footage of the 1995 Gainamatsuri. Gainax's support for FanimeCon in terms of attendance and having a booth in the dealer's room shows they're certainly not opposed to interacting with English-speaking fans on principle (for that matter, Gainax has attended European conventions as well).
