Not really, since they are checked closely before publication.  I am  
sure that Ace-A and Kadokawa are getting a bunch of e-mails and  
letters right about now.

Yep.

The phrase "the soul of Eva-02 has shut itself away" can be restated  
as "Eva-02 has a soul that has shut itself away," or "Eva-02 has a  
soul".

So, in the first part if Kaworu says "If Eva-02 did not have a soul,"  
this makes the logical relationship:

If not A, then B, because A.
      (A = Eva-02 having a soul)
      (B = ability to join/merge)

Which cannot work.

Ergo, Kaworu must be taking about himself when he says "If XXX did  
not have a soul."
