I don't think it is in his nature to do manga on a regular schedule.  
The only time he did so, really, was during the period of the  
production of the EVA anime and movies (i.e., the first four  
volumes). His habits didn't start with EVA; he's always seemed to  
prefer illustration and design to producing a manga story. And to be  
honest, the latter can be a bit of a slog.
