IIRC Kaji appealed to Shinji's sense of "duty" and "destiny", and  
also threw in a liberal dose of guilt for Shinji not doing what he  
could have to possibly save Toji.  Manipulation at its best.  Yes, it  
may have also "taught" Shinji something, but IMO Kaworu did it better.

Not at all.  Kaworu does care about what Shinji will feel, which is  
why he tells Shinji that he is dead no matter what happens, allays  
Shinji's guilt and fear, and says that he would rather it be at  
Shinji's hands so that Shinji will remember him.  It is a request  
from a friend to a friend, and granted by a friend.

No, in the end Shinji realizes that Kaworu is/was his friend, and  
Shinji has at least some peace with what he will do.  Kaworu even  
mentioned the possible scenario of not carrying out his mission and  
consequently being killed by Seele, so technically he is not forcing  
Shinji to do it.  Shinji acts of his own free will.

And anime Shinji's "love" for Kaworu can be ascribed to confusion  
(being caught off balance and reciprocating Kaworu's "advances") and  
desperation (a "safe harbor" after all the storms he has been  
through).  I would not call it love in the true sense.
