So Anno followed the Machiavelli guide to anime creation, make it so that 
the audience both hates and loves the series? That'd describe Evangelion to 
a T really.

Yeah, Anno probably does have hot-and-cold feelings towards otaku. On one 
hand he questions whether grown men should be watching series about giant 
robots fighting aliens, on the other he makes series about giant robots 
fighting aliens. Anno is weird. I'm suspect that there's at least one 
unofficial biography about him in Japan. I wonder what it would be like...
