@@I hope Yashima is not changed too much. IIRC it was all Misato's
operation, with the 3 kids, which just worked, & IMO is mainly
responsible for Misato getting promoted.

Movie-isation of TV shows always gets me nervous, as the "cosier"
elements always fall victim to up-pacing narrative & the main emphasis
on events.  The Gunbuster movie is a case in point.
