Of one sort. It was commented that the USSR ran down when their
"hard cases" lost the moral courage necessary to murder in large

Depending on the sort of people the JSSDF attracted and retained, very
possibly NOT the best sort, their willingness to slaughter the innocent
argues for this. Experience has told us that that sort often do not
react very constructively when they are first faced with serious lethal
opposition. It really messes with their world view.
I'm certain they did not go into NERV HQ expecting to die---and to die
for what? What motivates such people?
Life was cheap during and for a while after the Second Impact, but things
seem to have returned to more normal attitudes after that.
