Sad as in tragic.
I'm not sure what reality GoS1 was, not Iron Maiden 2 alternate
Evaverse. It happens when all the kids are still around, in 1 piece &
happy.  Misato & Kaji are there too.  2nd Impression is slightly
later, its (Saturn) cover has a chonological table showing where in
the Eva TV, 2I & GoS1 happen. IIRC there was also a 1st Impression
game, but I don't own that.

Going back to GoS1, its the first tragedy for Shinji. Mana was a good
match for him, being well-balanced, affectionate & the ideal
girlfriend. Her secret spoils the ending...  ;)
