[EVA] Eva Manga: Like? Dislike? (Was: No Stage this month)

It's been said many times, but it is completely improper to refer to Sadamoto's manga as a somehow fake or inauthentic version of the anime. Not only did the manga come first (indeed the first volume was released several months before the premiere of the anime), but Sadamoto is a co-creator of the EVANGELION concept as a whole, and it has always been understood at Gainax that his manga interpretation, though different, is equally as valid as the anime interpretation. To suggest it isn't legitimate for him to portray the characters in his own way seems particularly unfair; he designed them, after all.

Sadamoto's slow pace of work is frustrating, but he has always been that way. He's simply not cut out to do a manga on a regular schedule--he prefers illustration work and animation (Sadamoto himself is a quite talented animator, something often forgotten). Prior to EVA, the longest manga he had ever done was the five-chapter ROUTE 20, which was also plagued by delays. I daresay that Kadokawa is probably somewhat more indulgent (or considerate, if you like) towards its artists' schedules--but bear in mind SHONEN ACE is one of the few established manga magazines whose circulation has increased in recent years. So, as they say, they must be doing something right.
