Asuka was starting to decompose in 02 at the bottom of the lake,
before she "found" her mother's soul, & became "whole" again (a less
complete but similar process to Shinji's re-embodiment in 01 in the
Sea of Dirac?).  I guess it could be possible that the LCL in her tube
protected/preserved her so that either she "resurrected" again, partly
healing physically.

Or maybe Asuka is the first person to choose to return....
