I noticed that too. What's interesting is that 9/11 presumably didn't happen in EVA's timeline (I mean, it still could have, but New York City, like Tokyo, was likely already devastated by the flood waves of the Second Impact, so the gesture would have been of questionable effect--not to mention the  Second Impact itself would probably have changed just about everyone's plans and priorities). Of course, the glimpses of our own world seen in EVA suggest it falls under the possibilities of the Instrumentality.
