The best way to explain Shinji and Asuka (series-wise), as quoted by Reichu,
webmistress of Fangeeks Commentary Project:
Shinji and Asuka are absolutely depicted in the show as being inseparably
intertwined. They could even be considered "complementary". That is,
wherever they don't "line up", what is missing in one is made up for in the
other, more or less. Shinji and Asuka are like two pieces of paper that were
originally a single leaf, irregularly cut down the middle. Two halves of a
whole.

In terms of Rei and Shinji in the manga, a quote by Mr.Tines. Although he's
THE Anti-Shinji/Asuka shipper and his logic tends be confusing (a supposed
Post-3I Nuclear Winter occurs, for instance O_o), the man seems to know his
Eva. (In RE to my question: Would you say Shinji and Rei in the manga indeed
have a romance of sorts?)

Of sorts, certainly. The manga progresses more as I'd expected the series to
(before you-know-who arrived). What they have is by no means a full fledged
sighing and moaning, flowers and candle-light sort of thing; but, in the
limited time available to them, and with their two restricted personalities,
it goes about as far as they can. It would have taken a lot longer for both
of them to open up enough to each other (and themselves) to acknowledge what
it was. And even then, I would expect it to have involved a lot of just
sitting next to each other in silence, maybe holding hands.

Moving onto my own two cents, here's my main beef with the manga version:
Manga Shinji.
Shinji in the anime tends to be portrayed as just what he is, a realistic
and flawed 14 year old boy. He's NOT perfect, he runs away instead of
dealing with his problems (Despite this, he STILL pilots Eva, regardless of
the various pain it causes him (Toji losing his leg, Asuka & Rei getting
hurt in various battles, killing Kaworu, etc), and yet in the end he
realizes he can learn to love himself and others, rejects
Instrumentality because
it doesn't feel right, and stays in the real-world (26)/reality (26'). The
fact alone that he keeps on piloting shogoki makes him--in my mind, at
least--a hero.
Manga Shinji, on the other hand, seems to be portrayed as a stereotypical
violent, smart-alec youth. eg, the stereotypical angsty and violent (*cough*
Trying to punch Gendou *cough*) anti-hero. Something about his manga version
just doesn't seem to have that "human" aspect his anime counterpart has...
Although anime and manga Shinji share some of the same traits, to me, it
just doesn't seem like the same character.

And of course, you don't have to agree with me on any of this; I don't
expect you to. After all, "we all have to find our own answers." ;)

>@@ I'm don't doubt there will be the beach scene. But whether with the
same actions & dialogue is not so certain.

I might have said this before, but I'm putting my money on Last B (Rei's
served arm ED). I guess we'll just have to wait and see. ;)
