Sooo...the competition between the two that would later bring Naoko's mere 
engrams to choose the man over her own daughter...dismissed?
What about Rei's instability later countered through the bond made with 
Gendo and subsequently Shinji and the others? Her professed and later 
pursued (albeit for mixed and otherwise prevailing reasons) deathwish? It's 
at least as intended an interpretation if not more so. Cross reference with 
the Shinji-in-00' incident in which an impression of Rei is involved.
Not to mention Gendo, the man behind her existance which she loathes, and 
whom she could've easily harbored resentment at that time.

Well, this sounds just a tad less likely than the other way around. Calling 
her a hag is one thing, saying she's useless is something else altogether.
