The connection between the Rei clones and the dummy plugs/system is one 
terrible, terrible mess, IMO.

How are a bunch of soulless Rei bodies going to be useful pilots?

Doesn't quite explain why Shinji became "needed" once Rei was incapacitated 
in the EVA-00 activation incident...

In the NGE universe, every living thing (with the known exceptions) has a 
soul, so that kitten Kaworu killed would have an advantage over those 
clones.

"Destrudo" refers specifically to the self-destructive (etc.) impulse, so 
"releasing" it in the clones seems to imply that Ritsuko initiated 
"destruction through the permission of self-destruction".
