The "angels" are more imagery of Old Testament angels, who carried out the instructions of God, bringing death etc, & who said "fear not" to terrified spectators.
Or, as in Raiders of the Lost Ark, as a movie (very effective) version - way more frightening!

Closer to the TV Shinji at the end of ep.24 IMO - who was feeling betrayed, angry & sad, rather than the "alternate" Shinji in EoE, who was mentally gutted. I hope rebuild has the former, or manga version all the way through
