Possible spoilers









The Antarctic sea was red before EoE, fairly early on don't forget.  Its 
shown when Gendou & Fuyutuski are away in their enclosed ship (& Misato is 
left i/c back at NERV).

WRT ROE1 as a sequel or as a retelling, I think its either history 
rebooting, since we don't know what happened when Shinji decided he wanted 
everything the way it was, or it could just be Anno rearranging & cutting 
some nice moments (as for the Gunbuster movies) & embellishing the original 
story.  Whichever its early days.  I'll be disillusioned if the soul-in-Eva 
aspect is dropped however.  What happens to Toji, is what I'm most 
apprehensive about at the moment, remembering the manga.
