Wouldn't being an Angel and thus possessing the power to physically manifest one be enough to justify it? Likewise, we don't know if "AT Field is personal barrier" was in the show yet at that stage! It's likely, yes, but we don't have enough information about pre-production plotting to justify such thoughts. The idea that the AT field is more than just a psychic force field might not yet have entered the series. So much of the explanation of what's going on in EVA happens near the end, which we know wasn't yet set in stone when the series began or when the OP was created.

Look, I get that yes, there is some significance to the OP. But it's of incredibly dubious standing as a primary source to base a theory off of.

EVA was a work in progress. Even after the series aired there was work done on it. All we know is that they planned for a character who looked like Kaworu to appear in the show, that he was likely to be an Angel. Heck, that alone justifies him being next to AT Field. Remember, that Kaworu being an Angel was supposed to be a surprise twist!
