[EVA] Ghost Rei in Episode 01 was RE: The soul in Eva 00...

I'm surprised you think that - assuming this is indeed the answer - she was "nudging events" in some way:  if she was....what exactly did she do?  She was just there to "wave hello" as Shinji entered the point of his life when Evas and Angels would take it over.


However....how the heck did you make the logical jump to that the Children are "psychic"?  Well, not in as many words, i.e.  I do think Shinji has some sort of residual bond with Yui's soul inside Eva-01 which is the ultimate source of his violent hallucinations/dreams, and this has something to do with being an Eva pilot (notice that in episode 20, Toji also winds up in Shinji's dream, though apparently by accident because he's just a casual observer)

I have yet to see a good explanation for the bookended Rei appearances. The first replaces the Manga's version of events where Rei pilots Unit01 and is injured defending Shinji and Misato on their way to NERV. Now, from a dramatic point of view, making it that Shinji first sees Unit01 near the end of the episode is a lot stronger dramatically, but it does make the "Rei is injured" bit less of an impact. So instead we get Ghost Rei. Who is never explained. We get a similar Ghost Rei at the end of the series as well. Likewise not really explained, but then explanations for the weak.

So, are we dealing with Rei's subconscious choosing Shinji and Astrally Projecting? Time travelling EOE Lillith going back and pushing events to ensure that the timeline proceeds as necessary? An injured Rei psychically reaching out to Shinji?

A slight digression...The Children are psychic to some extent. Their ability to sync with the EVA is mental. I joke about them being Newtypes, but that's probably closer to an actual explanation for their abilities to pilot than we'll ever get. We are given that "only 14 year olds can pilot" and that's really not true, since we saw Yui and know Kyoko tried. Did Second Impact affect the AT fields of those children born after the event, weakening them and allowing for the psychic connections needed to make the animated flesh suits move?

Could it be Shinji having a precognitive vision of the future? Prophecy exists in the world of EVA, we can't write that out either.

I'm sure everyone here must have a theory on the Rei apparition. I'd like to hear them.
