If you'll read my, admittedly quite long, post above, I did actually 
discuss how the appearance of Rei in #01 is thematically significant and 
how we need not rely on  theories such as time travel to explain 
anything. The important thing to note here is that the appearances of 
all the "Rei 0's" are undoubtedly linked from a thematic standpoint, so 
we may as well attempt to explain them in some internally consistent 
fashion rather than leave them entirely unexplained and by extension 
holding them to be meaningless.
