I don't even understand where this notion comes from. Yes, GNR bites the 
bullet in EoE, but I never saw that as meaning Rei and Kaworu have also 
"died".
If anything, their words to Shinji about beging the hope that people 
will understand one another suggest to me that they live on in some 
abstract fashion.
