 > I will tell you this, though: when we first saw that scene in 1996, there
was no "theorizing" necessary, no need to overthink it--the immediate,
visceral reaction that I, and other people I knew had, is that she was
offering herself to him. It wasn't so much the gesture, but what she said;
in fact, if she hadn't said anything and had just taken his hand, I don't
think it would have been taken as anything but an attempt to reassure him.

Indeed. That was how I saw it. However, to go from that to a "Misato just
wants in Shinji's pants" theory is another story. It oversimplifies Misato
to a caricature. It's less about Misato desiring Shinji's body, and more
about Misato not knowing how to relate to men. Of her not knowing how to be
a mother.

The relationship between child and mother is primary to the series, and
Misato as Shinji's surrogate mother really doesn't get enough exploration in
the fandom. She's trying to be a madonna figure (Hence the cross necklace)
but can't, as she doesn't have the background to know what a mother is.

@Misato's last serious regret, as she lies dying in EoE, is failure as a
mother (to Shinji & Asuka). She knew that before of course, her desperate &
impassioned speech to Shinji at the elevator was from that. As was her
attempt to try get Shinji to help/rescue Asuka. Misato knew they were 2
sides of a coin & each needs the other, especially as she won't be there for
them. Asuka is matured in the beach scene, Shinji may be a bit....
