Did it? IIRC, episode 6 shows it in the middle of the city, and it is
spoken of as drilling down to the Geofront and over NERV HQ.  None of
that requires any sensing of Terminal Dogma & Lilith and could be
explained as simple luck (it's natural to drill in the middle, and
natural to put your HQ in the middle) or non-esoteric senses like
sonar or radar or what-have-you.
