They're smart. People buy anime for giant robots punching aliens. The sort
of people who are interested in deep psychological intrigue are a minority,
and Funimation, like ADV knows how to market their titles in a manner that
will get maximum exposure. If it makes you feel better, think of all the
action junkies who will buy EVA because of the high octane combat and fan
service and then get swept away by the social commentary and personal
relations. Evangelion was constructed to be a mecha anime primarily so that
people would watch the show. The main story content of Evangelion can be
done without giant robots, but giant robots sell LDs.
@going back many years, what made me try Evangelion, as an anime noob, was
having seen Gunbuster (the VHS release) first. Noriko's emotional extremes,
leading to her more mature metamorphosis, was the first animation I had ever
seen that had real deep feelings eating up a character. "Gainax" stuck in my
mind, & when ADV started releasing Eva, when I saw it was by Gainax, I
bought.
For anime watchers, there is now plenty of shows with deep-ish
personalisation available. I think the Japanese trailer for 1.01 had it just
right - shows the new animation, Shinji depressed, Misato offering
comfort/friendship in a big sisterly way, angst & action. Did Funimation
use the Japanese trailer? (Apart from Bamboo Blade - not watched yet - &
1.11 I don't buy their releases)
