It's true that TV shows are on a much tighter schedule than movies or
OAVs, but these still have release dates that can't be blown off
without consequence--after all, they are made with marketing,
distribution, and often, cross-promotion commitments to outside
parties. If I recall, Death and Rebirth actually *was* late, in the
sense that the original plan was that the entire "new" film was
supposed to have been completed by that time; instead, that had to
wait several months, until The End of Evangelion. This is why Rebirth
ends on a cliffhanger, with the Mass Production units circling above
Asuka; that was as far as they had gotten in completing it.
Gainax is better now, I would say, at budget and schedule than they
were before Evangelion; of course, it could be argued that they made
more worthwhile anime on average back when they lacked business
discipline. But then, I don't have to make a living off producing
anime; they do.
